| Stop Smoking Uk |
Question:
Looking for some info on programs in the UK to help people stop smoking.
Answer:
A new survey shows that 90% of family doctors in the UK feel the
pressure of the job stops them from helping patients to stop smoking.
The UK government is leading a drive to reduce the burden of
smoking-related illness on the National Health Service. It is estimated that smoking causes 46,000 deaths every year from cancer and another 40,000
from heart disease. One quarter of all strokes are attributable to
smoking.
Helping general practitioners (GPs) tackle smoking--shows patients
would welcome more help from their family doctor and that almost all GPs believe it is the best thing they could do for patients' health.
In an interview with Reuters Health, Bobak said the UK government's
decision earlier this year to make nicotine replacement therapy widely available on the NHS meant GPs were better placed than ever before to curb smoking.
