| Quit Smoking Pill |
Question:
What is the name and dosage of the quit smoking pill?
Answer:
That would be Zyban. It's the same stuff as Wellbutrin SR (sustained-release),
the version which is sold as an antidepressant. The generic name is bupropion
hydrochloride. I have heard good things about it from people who were trying to
quit smoking. The exact mechanism of action of bupropion is unknown, but it
appears to involve dopamine and possibly norepinephrine in some way.
Smokers dying to kick the habit will soon have access to a new pill that
purports to help them stop puffing. The ingredients for the drug,
Chantix, will be manufactured at the Cork plant of Pfizer, the
pharmaceutical giant that also makes Viagra.
