Question:
What does "mildly emphyseous" mean?
Answer:
As long as you don't smoke, it won't get any worse.
I had a thorough physical done earlier this year. Chest x-rays were
taken because I was a heavy smoker for 24 years. The x-rays showed my
lungs to be "well aerated" but that there were small darkened areas
where the lung tissue had been permanently damaged by smoking. These
small areas are emphysema. Fortunately the disease has been arrested. I
have run several marathons and will be doing a 100 mile bike race next
week. I feel I am in the best condition of my life. The only times I
have problems is when I laugh very hard, which usually causes me to
cough very hard, or when I run sprints, whch I usually avoid. A "touch"
of mild emphysema is managable.
