Herbal Stop Smoking
Question:
As an alternative to try and stop smoking I've tried herbal cigarettes which I bought at a health food shop. I find these work as a substitute but I wonder how healthy these actually are.

Answer:
I'm not sure what "herbal cigarettes" you're talking about, but if they are clove cigarettes they contain about 60% tobacco, and plenty of nicotine. When the clove oil burns, it creates a kind of anesthesia in the smoke, so you can't feel the damage they are doing. They are just as bad, or maybe worse, than ordinary cigarettes. Either way you are not stop smoking. The nicotine content (or lack thererof) of the herbal smoke is not a factor. Nicotine is the chemical that gets you hooked on smoking, but it really is about as harmful as the caffiene in coffee. Tar is harmful, it doesn't matter if it is herbal or tobacco. The smoke is very damaging. There are 40+ cancer causing chemicals in cigarette smoke, and I don't know if anyone has ever done a study on exactly WHAT chemicals are in herbal cigarettes.
