| Help Someone Stop Smoking |
Question:
My mom is 55 years old has been smoking for about 20-30 years.
I'd really love her to stop smoking but I don't know the best way to
approach her. Is it possible to help
someone stop smoking if they don't want to quit in the first place?
Answer:
If someone doesn't want to quit, they won't. Quitting only works if you
do it for yourself. Does your Mom get on the computer? Can you show her
this newsgroup? How about links to sites about the health hazzards? That
being said, your Mom knows smoking is bad for her and bottom line she
won't quit until she wants to quit.
No one can talk someone into quitting. You have to want
to do it for yourself because you want to. Since quitting over 8 months
ago I look back now and think how stupid I was for over 22 years.
Your heart is in the right place but your mom has to make
that decision herself.
If she's changing the subject I'd
say she's not even ready to listen. Of course nagging and shame don't work
on this addiction either. I know many tried that with me over the years.
Only when I was ready did I hear what anyone had to say about quitting.
Ask your mom everyday if she has stopped smoking yet. Don't discuss
it, just move on, but ask her everyday.
