Is emphysema fatal?
Answer:
The smoking disease for today is emphysema. Emphysema is not usually a
fatal disease. That doesn't mean that it can't kill you, because it
certainly can. But its main effect is to cause you agony while you are
still alive. Thus, most of the suffering of emphysema victims does not
show up in mortality statistics for smokers.
If you have severe emphysema, it's not only extremely painful,
it's a lot of work to continue breathing. Some emphysema victims
eventually give up the struggle to breathe, and then they die.
