| Emphysema Medicine |
Question:
HOw is inherited emphysema treated?
Answer:
A therapy has been available for inherited emphysema since
1987; a special medicine called Prolastin. This medicine replaces
the alpha1 protein in the blood. It is given in a vein
(intravenously) and the dose is dependent on body weight.
This treatment is usually given once a week.
In addition to medicines, the management of inherited
emphysema includes exercise and a healthy lifestyle,
avoidance of infection, techniques to bring up mucus,
oxygen therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation.
Inherited emphysema is relatively common among inherited
disorders and because of this, research is constantly
being done to develop new therapies.
