| Emphysema Death |
Question:
What can you tell me about fatal emphysema?
Answer:
It's a horrible death. It's like suffocating.
Some people say the worst thing about it is that it doesn't kill you
fast enough.
Smoking causes almost 90 percent of cases of emphysema, while other
environmental irritants are blamed for most other cases.
In all cases, its sufferers live with the feeling of not being able to
breathe because they cannot get enough oxygen.
That happens because tiny air sacs in the lungs that transport oxygen
are destroyed, most often from cigarette toxins. Typically, these sacs,
called alveoli, transport oxygen into the lungs and carry carbon
dioxide out.
People can live for years with the illness, in varying degrees of
limits on their lifestyle.
