| Effects Of Smoking On The Fetus |
Question:
What are the effects of smoking marijuana on the fuduring pregnancy?
Answer:
Whether a pregnant woman or a parent smokes (tobacco or marijuana), the
smoke can put a tremendous strain on a developing fetus or young baby.
Here's what actually happens when a pregnant woman smokes (tobacco or
marijuana). Smoking releases gases that take the place of oxygen in the
mother's blood. Adults have more reserves--more tolerance to less oxygen. We
don't know how much oxygen reserve a fetus has, but it stands to reason that
it has far less than an adult.
Following are the known effects of cigarette smoking on the developing fetus
and the newborn: Smoking is associated with premature birth, low birth
weight (smaller babies are often more susceptible to infections), and other
unnecessary risks. Smoking around newborns predisposes them to a higher risk
of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)SIDS and to getting "colds."
