Advanced Emphysema
Question:
Just wondering if when I will see the benefits of quitting smoking, which I did 4 weeks ago? As a side note I have just recently been diagnosed with advanced emphysema?

Answer:
If you smoke and stop, the average person will regain about 60 cubic centimeters of lung function per year for up to two years, then they go back to losing lung function but at the same rate as a non-smoker. There are people here like me who quit because they were diagnosed with early emphysema, there are people who have advanced emphysema, there are people who did not have emphysema when they quit but have since developed it. The average person regains some lung capacity, mine continued to decline, but that's how averages work - some regain more, some less, some lose. How much yu smoked and for how long determines how much damage you have done to your lungs, but they'll never go back to what they would have been like had you never smoked.
